[lang-en]You probably heard of the concept phase in middle/high school science classes. Usually solid/liquid/gas are the most famous three phases. In physics, phases are defined as the region where various physical properties are good(analytic) functions of various parameters, such as temperature and pressure. For example, think about the phase diagram of water shown below.[/lang-en]
[lang-en]Except for the phase boundaries represented by lines, physical properties(ex. specific heat) in the regions corresponding to phases(solid, liquid, and gas) become good(analytic) functions of temperature and pressure. On the other hand, these properties or their derivatives become discontinuous on phase boundaries, and these features are crucial for identifying the phase transitions in real researches.[/lang-en]
[lang-en]Solid-liquid-gas transition is not the exhaustive lists of phase transitions. Superconductor transitions and ferromagnetic to paramagnetic transitions are also examples of phase transitions. These always have been central topics in physics, and physicists always thought of a universal approach to phase transitions. Landau theory does give some partial answers to this question.[/lang-en]
[lang-ko]Landau의 상전이 이론[/lang-ko] [lang-en] Landau's theory of phase transitions[/lang-en]
[lang-en]Lev Landau(1908-1968) is a very famous Soviet Union physicists, and left tremendous amounts of works. One of his representative works is the Landau theory which I will shortly explain. Personally, I think the beauty of this theories lies in its universality despite of its low barrier. You only need to draw a graph of a 4th order polynomial and the fact that the system prefers low energy. The central quantity in Landau theory is the order parameter. Basically, Landau theory explains phase transitions as breaking the symmetry and formation of ordered when the temperature of the system is lowered. Order parameter is defined as the quantity which is non-zero in the symmetry-broken phase, while is zero on the symmetric phase. For example, magnetization density is the order parameter in the ferromagnetic transition.[/lang-en]
[lang-en]The central part of Landau theory is assuming that the system's free energy is expandable in terms of its order parameter $m$,[/lang-en]
$$F(m,T) = a_0(T)+a_1(T)m+a_2(T)m^2+a_3(T)m^3+a_4(T)m^4+\cdots$$
[lang-en]where $T$ is the temperature.[/lang-en]
[lang-en]Now, let us assume that under the transformation $m \rightarrow −m$ the energy is invariant. This means that in a magnet, the energy is the same when the direction of magnetization is reversed. Sounds reasonable right? Then, the coefficients of odd order terms becomes 0.[/lang-en]
[lang-en]Finally, assume that $a_0$ and $a_4>0$ do not depend on temperature since it is irrevelant to the current discussion. Now the core part comes. The graph of $F(m, T) − F(0, T) = a_2(T)m^2 + a_4 m^4$ is shown below.[/lang-en]
[lang-en]As you can see, the position of minimum changes with the sign of $a_2(T)$. Since the system prefers the lowest energy, it stays at $m=0$ for cases a and b, but falls to $m \neq 0$ for case c. Thus, phase transition from $m=0$ to $m \neq 0$ occurs at $T_c$ where $a_2(T_c)=0$. Isn't it astonishing that phase transition can be explained with such a simple argument? Furthermore, there are two $m$ values with the lowest energy, $\pm$, but the system can have only one $m$ value. Even if the energy is invariant under $m\rightarrow -m$, the system is not. This phenomenon is called spontaneous symmetry breaking(SSB).[/lang-en]
[lang-en]There are various kinds of phase transitions. One of the criteria for classifying them is the critical exponent. Phase transitions with the same critical exponents are called to be in the same universality class.[/lang-en]
[lang-en]Here, we only calculate the critical exponent $beta$. As said before, $a_2(T_c)=0$, so we can expand as $a_2(T) = a(T-T_c)$. Then, the free energy is written as below.[/lang-en]
$$F(m,T) -F(0,T) = a(T-T_c)m^2+bm^4$$
[lang-en]Now, the equilibrium $m$ value is determined by $dF/dm=0$. When we solve this equation, the result is shown below for $T<T_c$.[/lang-en]
$$m=\sqrt{\frac{a}{2b}}(T_c-T)^{1/2} \sim (T_c-T)^{1/2}$$
[lang-en]The $beta$ is one of the critical exponents. In Landau theory, $beta=1/2$. Using the above free energy, we can also calculate other critical exponents, $\alpha,\gamma$, and $\delta$.[/lang-en]
[lang-en]As a concluding remark, Landau theory is not everything. Basically, Landau theory is a mean-field theory, which ignores fluctuations. Thus, when fluctuations become important, it fails predict the correct critical exponent values. Nevertheless, I think the charming point of Landau theory is explaining complex phase transitions with such a simple idea.[/lang-en]
