[lang-en]If you read the above article, I would think you are familiar with Ohm's law, Drude model, and the conductivity formula shown below.[/lang-en]
$$\sigma = \frac{ne^2 \tau}{m}$$
[lang-en]In freshman physics, we assume that metal's free electrons collide with nuclei or cations in Drude model. Let's look at if this assumption is reasonable.[/lang-en]
[lang-en] Copper, a metal frequently used for wires, has conductivity of $\sigma= 5.96 \times 10^7$ [S/m] at 293.15 K. Here, unit [S] means $[\Omega^{-1}]$. Also, if we assume the two valence electrons become the free electron, the electron density of copper is $n = 8.47 \times 10^{22}\, [\text{cm}^{-3}]$. Using these values, we can calculate the mean collision time $\tau$.[/lang-en]
$$\tau = 2.50 \times 10^{-14}\, [\text{s}]$$
[lang-en]Let's calculate the mean free path. Since free electrons are in thermal motion, the velocity is determined by $\frac{1}{2}mv^2 = k_\text{B}T$, and the mean free path reads,[/lang-en]
$$l = v\tau = 2.35\, [\text{nm}]$$
[lang-en]Sounds reasonable, since interatomic distances are about 0.1 nm ~ 1 nm. Is this all?[/lang-en]
[lang-ko]진실[/lang-ko][lang-en]Truth[/lang-en]
[lang-en]In reality, if we measure the mean free path for extremely pure samples at low temperatures, we get a result of several centimeters. According to our former theory, the electrons collide after passing about $10^8$ nuclei. This does not make sense. What is wrong with our theory?[/lang-en]
[lang-en]The answer is "Electrons do not collide with nuclei." What? What are you talking about?[/lang-en]
[lang-en]To understand this, we need the think about the structure of metals. Metals are composed of electrons and periodically arranged cations. Thus, electrons feel the periodic potential of periodic cations.[/lang-en]
[lang-en]According to the Bloch theorem in quantum mechanics, the electron eigenstate wavefunction under a periodic potential $V(\mathbf{r})$ is written as below.[/lang-en]
$$\psi_{n\mathbf{k}}(\mathbf{r}) = e^{i\mathbf{k}\cdot\mathbf{r}} u_{n\mathbf{k}}(\mathbf{r})$$
[lang-en]Here, $u_\mathbf{k}(\mathbf{r})$ is a function with the same period as the potential. Also, the energy corresponding to the eigenstate is given as $\epsilon_n(\mathbf{k})$ and the momentum is $\mathbf{p}_n(\mathbf{k}) = \nabla_\mathbf{k}\epsilon_n(\mathbf{k})$. This value is not always 0, so some of the electrons' eigenstates have non-zero velocity. Since eigenstate means stationary states with respect to time, it means that electrons move without an external electric field, and the current flows.[/lang-en]
[lang-en]Thus, in a perfectly periodic lattice, the electrical conductivity becomes infinity. Oops. Much more weird conclusion...[/lang-en]
[lang-ko]전자의 산란 메커니즘[/lang-ko][lang-en]The scattering mechanisms of electrons[/lang-en]
[lang-en]To obtain a finite conductivity, we need some mechanisms that bring the velocity of electrons to 0. In other words, we need to change the velocity vector by some collisions. However, as said above, periodically arranged nuclei cannot change the velocity.[/lang-en]
[lang-en]This means that something breaking the periodicity can scatter electrons and change the velocity. There are two kinds of this "something".[/lang-en]
- [lang-ko]결정의 결함, 즉 결정 내 원자핵의 부재나 다른 원자핵의 존재[/lang-ko][lang-en]Defects in crystals, i.e. vacancies or interstitials[/lang-en]
- [lang-ko]절대 0도가 아닌 온도에서 존재하는 결정의 진동[/lang-ko][lang-en]Vibrations of crystal present in finite temperatures[/lang-en]
[lang-en]We call #1 impurity scattering and #2 phonon scattering. Due to these two mechanisms, electrons scatter, and finite conductivity is obtained.[/lang-en]
RRR(Residual-Resistivity Ratio)
[lang-en]Let's take one step further. #1 mechanism does not depend on the temperature, but #2 mechanism does since vibrations become larger when the temperature is elevated. Especially, there is no vibration at absolute zero, and scatterings caused by #2 mechanisms do not occur at absolute zero. Thus, when we compare low-temperature conductivity and high-temperature conductivity, we can find out how important is #1 mechanism in a given sample. We call the quantity related to this statement as the RRR(Residual-Resistivity Ratio).[/lang-en]

Epilogue
[lang-en]Determining electric conductivity from theory is a very complicated problem. We need to consider electron-electron interactions aside from the two mechanisms, and there might be non-linear effects beyond Ohm's law. Furthermore, we call phenomena like electric conduction the transport phenomena, and there are various of them such as the Hall effect. This area is being widely investigated.[/lang-en]
