[lang-en]In the previous post, we learned what tuples are, and what Cartesian products are. Now then, we should consider a set of tuples, in other words, a subset of Cartesian products. Look at the below:[/lang-en]
[def]{1. }[lang-en]Let $X$ and $Y$ be two sets. Then a subset $R$ of the set $X \times Y$ is called a $binary \; relation$ between $X$ and $Y$. The set $X$ is called the $domain$ of $R$, and the set $Y$ is called the $codomain$ of $R$. Additionally, the set $\{ y \in Y \mid \exists x \in X \st (x,y) \in R \}$ is called the $image$ of $R$. In order to specify the choice of the sets $X$ and $Y$, some authors define a binary relation as an ordered triple $(X,Y,G)$, where $G$ is a subset of $X \times Y$ called the graph of the binary relation $R$. But, in this post, we define binary relations as subsets of the Cartesian product $X \times Y$. Moreover, we write $xRy$ if $(x,y) \in R$ where $R$ is a binary relation between $X$ and $Y$.[/lang-en][lang-ko]두 집합 $X$와 $Y$가 주어졌다고 하자. 또한, 집합 $\{ y \in Y \mid \exists x \in X \st (x,y) \in R \}$을 $R$의 치역 또는 상이라고 부른다.
[lang-en]Furthermore, some authors define $n$-ary relations which are subsets of Cartesian product of $n$ sets. But $n$-ary relations can be written in the terms of binary relations. So, we only define binary relation in this series, [ZFC Set Theory]. Also, there are some important types of binary relations.[/lang-en]
1. [lang-en]Some Important Types of Binary Relations[/lang-en][lang-ko]이항 관계의 유형[/lang-ko]
[lang-en]As mentioned above, there are some important types of binary relations. Some important types of binary relation $R$ between two sets $X$ and $Y$ are listed below:[/lang-en]
1.1. [lang-en]Injective (also called Left-Unique)[/lang-en][lang-ko]단사 관계 Injective Relation[/lang-ko]

[lang-en]For all $x,z \in X$ and $y \in Y$, if $xRy$ and $zRy$ then $x=z$. Such a binary relation is said to be $injective$. For such a relation, $\{ Y \}$ is called a $primary \; key$ of $R$.[/lang-en]

[lang-en]For all $x \in X$ and $y,z \in Y$, if $xRy$ and $xRz$ then $y=z$. Such a binary relation is called a $partial \; function$, or said to be $functional$. For such a relation, $\{ X \}$ is called a $primary \; key$ of $R$.[/lang-en]

[lang-en]A $homogeneous \; relation$ over a set $X$ is a binary relation between $X$ and itself, i.e., $X=Y$. It is also simply called a binary relation over a set $X$. Some important types of homogeneous relation $R$ over a set $X$ are listed below:[/lang-en]
1.5.1. [lang-en]Reflexive[/lang-en][lang-ko]반사 관계 Reflexive Relation[/lang-ko]

[lang-en]For all $x \in X$, $xRx$. Such a homogeneous relation is said to be $reflexive$.[/lang-en]

2. [lang-en]Operations on Binary Relations[/lang-en][lang-ko]이항 관계의 연산[/lang-ko]
[lang-en]Now that we've looked at some important types of binary relation, we shall look at the operations on binary relations. Some operations on binary relations are listed below:[/lang-en]
2.1. [lang-en]Composition[/lang-en][lang-ko]합성 Composition[/lang-ko]
[lang-en]If $R$ is a binary relation between two sets $X$ and $Y$, and if $S$ is a binary relation between two sets $Y$ and $Z$, the $composition$ of $R$ and $S$ is defined as the set below:[/lang-en]
$$ S \circ R = \{ (x,z) \in X \times Z \mid \exists y \in Y \st xRy \land ySz \} $$
[lang-en]In other words, $x \left( S \circ R \right) z$ if and only if there exists a $y \in Y$ such that $xRy$ and $ySz$. For example, the composition $\text{(is parent of)} \circ \text{(is mother of)}$ yields $\text{(is grandmother of)}$, while the compositoin $\text{(is mother of)} \circ \text{(is parent of)}$ yields $\text{(is maternal grandparent of)}$.[/lang-en]
[lang-en]Further, the composition operation has an algebraic property, which is associativity. Look at the below:[/lang-en]
[thm]{2.}[lang-en]Let $S$, $T$, $U$, and $V$ be four sets and let each $R$, $Q$, and $P$ be a binary relation between sets $S$ and $T$, $T$ and $U$, $U$ and $V$, respectively. Then:[/lang-en][lang-ko]네 집합 $S$, $T$, $U$, $V$가 주어졌다고 하고, $R$, $Q$, $P$이 각각 $S$와 $T$, $T$와 $U$, $U$와 $V$ 사이의 이항 관계라고 하자.
$$(P \circ Q) \circ R = P \circ (Q \circ R)$$[/thm]
Proof.
$$\begin{array}{ll} & s \left( \left( P \circ Q \right) \circ R \right) v \\ \Leftrightarrow & \exists t \in T \st sRt \land t \left( P \circ Q \right) v \\ \Leftrightarrow & \exists t \in T \st sRt \land \left( \exists u \in U \st tQu \land uPv \right) \\ \Leftrightarrow & \exists u \in U \st uPv \land \left( \exists t \in T \st sRt \land tQu \right) \\ \Leftrightarrow & \exists u \in U \st uPv \land s \left( Q \circ R \right) u \\ \Leftrightarrow & s \left( P \circ \left( Q \circ R \right) \right) v \end{array}$$
$\blacksquare$
[lang-en]Thanks to the theorem above, we can write the notation $P \circ Q \circ R$ without ambiguity.[/lang-en]
2.2. [lang-en]Converse[/lang-en][lang-ko]역관계 Converse[/lang-ko]
[lang-en]If $R$ is a binary relation between two sets $X$ and $Y$, the $converse$ of $R$ is defined as the set below:[/lang-en]
$$ R^\textsf{T} = \{ (y,x) \in Y \times X \mid xRy \} $$
[lang-en]In other words, $yR^\textsf{T}x$ if and only if $xRy$. For example, the binary relation $\geq$ is the converse of the binary relation $\leq$.[/lang-en]
2.3. [lang-en]Complement[/lang-en][lang-ko]여관계 Complement[/lang-ko]
[lang-en]If $R$ is a binary relation between two sets $X$ and $Y$, the $complement$ of $R$ is defined as the set below:[/lang-en]
$$ R^\textsf{c} = \{ (x,y) \in X \times Y \mid \neg \left( xRy \right) \} $$
[lang-en]In other words, $xR^\textsf{c}y$ if and only if not $xRy$. For example, the binary relation $>$ is the complement of the binary relation $\leq$.[/lang-en]
[lang-ko]다른 말로 하면, $xR^\textsf{c}y$인 것은 $\neg \left( xRy \right)$인 것과 필요충분조건입니다.
2.4. [lang-en]Restriction[/lang-en][lang-ko]축소 Restriction[/lang-ko]
[lang-en]If $R$ is a binary relation between two sets $X$ and $Y$, and if a set $Z$ is a subset of $X$, the $restriction$ $R \upharpoonright Z$ of $R$ is defined as the set below:[/lang-en]
$$ R \upharpoonright Z = \{ (x,y) \in Z \times Y \mid xRy \} $$
[lang-en]In other words, $x(R \upharpoonright Z)y$ if and only if $xRy$ and $x \in Z$.[/lang-en]
[lang-ko]다른 말로 하면, $x(R \upharpoonright Z)y$인 것은 $xRy$이면서 $x \in Z$인 것과 필요충분조건입니다.[/lang-ko]
3. [lang-en]Functions[/lang-en][lang-ko]함수 Functions[/lang-ko]
[lang-en]Now that we know about what binary relation is, some important types of binary relation, and operations on binary relations, let's look at the more specific binary relation, which is called a "function." Look at the below:[/lang-en]
[def]{3. }[lang-en]Let $f$ be a binary relation between two sets $X$ and $Y$. If $f$ is total and functional, then $f$ is called a $function$, and we write this as $f : X \to Y$. Further, $f(x)$ denotes $y$ if $f$ is a function and $xfy$. Also, we write as $f : x \mapsto f(x)$ where a function $f$ maps $x$ to $f(x)$.[/lang-en][lang-ko]두 집합 $X$와 $Y$ 사이의 이항 관계 $f$를 생각하자.
[lang-en]From the above definition, we can obtain some theorems. Look at the below:[/lang-en]
[thm]{4.}[lang-en]Let $f : Y \to Z$ and $g : X \to Y$ be functions and $X$, $Y$, $Z$ be sets. Then, $f \circ g$ is also a function.[/lang-en][lang-ko]$X$, $Y$, $Z$가 세 집합이고 $f : Y \to Z$와 $g : X \to Y$가 함수라고 하자.
Proof.
[lang-en]To show that $f \circ g$ is a function, we have to show that:[/lang-en]
- [lang-en]$f \circ g$ is total;[/lang-en][lang-ko]$f \circ g$가 완전 관계이다.[/lang-ko]
- [lang-en]and $f \circ g$ is functional.[/lang-en][lang-ko]$f \circ g$가 함수형 관계이다.[/lang-ko]
[lang-en]First of all, we shall prove the first claim, (i). To show this, consider an element $x \in X$. Then, since $g$ is a function, there exists $y \in Y$ such that $xgy$. Also, since $f$ is a function, there exists $z \in Z$ such that $yfz$. Hence, by the definition of the composition of $f$ and $g$, we obtain that $x(f \circ g)z$ and thus $f \circ g$ is total.[/lang-en]
[lang-en]Secondly, we shall prove the rest. To show (ii), consider elements $z,z' \in Z$ and $x \in X$ such that $x(f \circ g)z$ and $x(f \circ g)z'$. Then, by the definition of the composition of relations, there exist $y,y' \in Y$ such that $xgy$, $xgy'$, $yfz$, and $y'fz'$. Since $g$ is a function, $y = y'$. Hence, $z=z'$ because $f$ is also a function. This means that $f \circ g$ is also functional and this completes the proof.[/lang-en]
이를 보이기 위해 $x(f \circ g)z$이고 $x(f \circ g)z'$이도록 하는 $x \in X$와 $z,z' \in Z$를 생각합시다.
$\blacksquare$
[thm]{5.}[lang-en]Let $f : X \to Y$ be a function. If $f$ is injective and surjective, then the converse $f^\textsf{T}$ is a function $Y$ to $X$.[/lang-en][lang-ko]$f : X \to Y$가 함수라고 하자.
Proof.
[lang-en]Let $f : X \to Y$ be a function and let $f$ be injective and surjective. Then, for every $x \in X$ there uniquely exists a $y \in Y$ such that $xfy$ and for every $y \in Y$ there uniquely exists $x \in X$ such that $xfy$. By the definition of $f^\textsf{T}$, $yf^\textsf{T}x$ if and only if $xfy$ and this means that $f^\textsf{T}$ is also a function since for every $y \in Y$ there uniquely exists $x \in X$ such that $yf^\textsf{T}x$.[/lang-en]
그러면 임의의 $x \in X$에 대하여 $xfy$인 $y \in Y$가 유일하게 존재하며, 반대로, 임의의 $y \in Y$에 대하여 $xfy$인 $x \in X$가 유일하게 존재합니다. $f^\textsf{T}$의 정의에 의해, $yf^\textsf{T}x$인 것과 $xfy$인 것이 동치이므로, 임의의 $y \in Y$에 대하여 $yf^\textsf{T}x$인 $x \in X$가 유일하게 존재합니다.
$\blacksquare$
[lang-en]Now that we know what a function is, we shall look at the types of functions. Some important types of functions $f : X \to Y$ are listed below.[/lang-en]
3.1. [lang-en]Injection[/lang-en][lang-ko]단사 함수 Injection[/lang-ko]
$$ \forall x_1, x_2 \in X, \; x_1 \neq x_2 \Rightarrow f(x_1) \neq f(x_2) $$
[lang-en]For any two distinct $x_1,x_2 \in X$, $f(x_1)$ and $f(x_2)$ are not the same. Such a function is called an $injection$.[/lang-en]
3.2. [lang-en]Surjection[/lang-en][lang-ko]전사 함수 Surjection[/lang-ko]
$$ \forall y \in Y, \; \exists x \in X \st f(x) = y $$
[lang-en]For every element $y$ in $Y$, there is an element $x \in X$ such that $f(x) = y$. Such a function is called a $surjection$.[/lang-en]
3.3. [lang-en]Bijection[/lang-en][lang-ko]전단사 함수 Bijection[/lang-ko]
$$ \forall y \in Y, \; \exists! x \in X \st f(x) = y $$
[lang-en]If a function $f : X \to Y$ is a surjection and also a injection, then $f$ is called a $bijection$.[/lang-en]
3.4. [lang-en]Inverse[/lang-en][lang-ko]역함수 Inverse[/lang-ko]
[lang-en]Let $f : X \to Y$ be a function. Then, the function $f^{-1} : Y \to X$ satisfying the following is called an $inverse$ of $f$.[/lang-en]
[lang-ko]함수 $f : X \to Y$가 주어졌다고 합시다.
$$\begin{array}{c} \forall y \in Y, \; (f \circ f^{-1})(y) = y \\ \forall x \in X, \; (f^{-1} \circ f)(x) = x \end{array}$$
[lang-en]With this definition, we can obtain the theorems below.[/lang-en]
[thm]{6.}[lang-en]Let $f : X \to Y$ be a function. Then, $f$ has an inverse if and only if $f$ is bijective.[/lang-en][lang-ko]$f : X \to Y$가 함수라고 하자.
[lang-en]The proof of the Theorem 6. is quite simple so it is left for the readers.[/lang-en]
[lang-ko]Theorem 6.
[thm]{7.}[lang-en]Let a function $f : X \to Y$ have an inverse. Then, the inverse of $f$ is unique.[/lang-en][lang-ko]함수 $f : X \to Y$가 역함수를 가진다고 하자.
Proof.
[lang-en]Let $g : Y \to X$ and $g' : Y \to X$ be two inverses of $f$. Then:[/lang-en]
[lang-ko]두 함수 $g : Y \to X$와 $g' : Y \to X$가 모두 $f$의 역함수라고 합시다.
$$ g = g \circ \left( f \circ g' \right) = \left( g \circ f \right) \circ g' = g' $$
[lang-en]Therefore, the inverse of $f$ is unique.[/lang-en]
$\blacksquare$
[lang-en]By the theorems above, we can obtain a corollary:[/lang-en]
[cor]{7.1.}[lang-en]Let a function $f : X \to Y$ be bijective. Then, the inverse $f^{-1}$ of $f$ and the converse $f^\textsf{T}$ of $f$ are the same.[/lang-en][lang-ko]함수 $f : X \to Y$가 전단사 함수라고 하자.
[lang-en]The proof of Corollary 7.1. is also left for the readers.[/lang-en]
[lang-ko]Corollary 7.1.
[lang-en]And always, thanks for reading.[/lang-en]
