[lang-en]Last time, we present the principle of least action and derived the Euler-Lagrange equation. We also talked about the benefits of Lagrange mechanics.[/lang-en]
[lang-en]This time, we are going to apply the Euler-Lagrange equations to real systems.[/lang-en]
[lang-ko]1차원 퍼텐셜 속의 입자[/lang-ko][lang-en]Particle in a 1D potential[/lang-en]
[lang-en]The first example is a particle in a 1D potential $V(x)$. The lagrangian of this system is given below.[/lang-en]
$$L=T-V=\frac{1}{2}m\dot{x}^2 - V(x)$$
[lang-en]Here, $T$ is the kinetic energy, $V$ is the potential energy, and $m$ is the mass. We now substitute this lagrangian into the Euler-Lagrange equation.[/lang-en]
$$\frac{\partial L}{\partial x} = - \frac{dV}{dx}, \frac{\partial L}{\partial \dot{x}} = m\dot{x}$$
$$\frac{\partial L}{\partial x} - \frac{d}{dt}\left( \frac{\partial L}{\partial \dot{x}} \right ) = 0 \implies m\dot{x} = -\frac{dV}{dx}=F(x)$$
[lang-en]We now obtained the well-known Newton's equation. Generally, for many mechanical systems, we get Newton's equations if we define the lagrangian as the difference between kinetic energy and potential energy. However, this does not hold always.[/lang-en]
[lang-ko]전자기장 하의 입자[/lang-ko][lang-en]Particle in an electromagnetic field[/lang-en]
(즉, $\mathbf{E} = -\nabla \phi - \partial \mathbf{A} / \partial t, \mathbf{B} = \nabla \times \mathbf{A}$.)
[lang-en]Think about a particle under electromagnetic field $\mathbf{E},\mathbf{B}$. Let us denote the scalar potential as $\phi$ and the vector potential as $\mathbf{A}$.($\mathbf{E} = -\nabla \phi - \partial \mathbf{A} / \partial t, \mathbf{B} = \nabla \times \mathbf{A}$.) Then think about the following lagrangian.[/lang-en]
$$ L = \frac{1}{2}m|\dot{\mathbf{x}}|^2 - q\phi + q\dot{\mathbf{x}} \cdot \mathbf{A}$$
[lang-en]First, think about the $x$-direction equation of motion.[/lang-en]
$$\frac{\partial L}{\partial x} = -q \frac{\partial \phi}{\partial x} + q\dot{\mathbf{x}}\cdot\frac{\partial \mathbf{A}}{\partial x}, \frac{\partial L}{\partial \dot{x}} = m\dot{x} + qA_x$$
$$\frac{d}{dt}\left( \frac{\partial L}{\partial \dot{x}}\right) =m \ddot{x} + q(\dot{\mathbf{x}}\cdot \nabla) A_x + q\frac{\partial A_x}{\partial t}$$
$$\frac{\partial L}{\partial x} - \frac{d}{dt}\left( \frac{\partial L}{\partial \dot{x}} \right ) = 0 $$
$$\implies m\ddot{x} = -q\left( \frac{\partial \phi}{\partial x} +\frac{\partial A_x}{\partial t} \right) + q\dot{y}\left(\frac{\partial A_y}{\partial x} - \frac{\partial A_x}{\partial y}\right) + q\dot{z}\left(\frac{\partial A_z}{\partial x} - \frac{\partial A_x}{\partial z}\right)$$
$$\implies m\ddot{x} = qE_x + q\dot{y}B_z - q\dot{z}B_y = q(\mathbf{E} + \mathbf{v}\times\mathbf{B})_x$$
[lang-en]Similarly to other components, we can obtain the following equation of motion.[/lang-en]
$$m\ddot{\mathbf{x}} = q(\mathbf{E}+\mathbf{v}\times\mathbf{B})$$
[lang-en]We obtained the famous Lorentz force law. However, the lagrangian we wrote was not in the form of $L=T-V$. Then, how should we construct the lagrangian for systems that $L=T-V$ is not valid? Actually, there is a way, but this is beyond our scope. So, we will pass it now.[/lang-en]
[lang-en]We looked at two examples. Since this is not the central part of our story, we only deal with it briefly. If you are interested, refer to the Marion or Goldstein mechanics. You can see various applications of lagrangians to oscillating systems or central force systems/[/lang-en]
