[lang-en]Finally, this is the last article of the mechanics series! This time, we will learn about the connections between Lagrange & Hamilton mechanics and quantum mechanics.[/lang-en]
[lang-ko]라그랑주 역학과 양자역학[/lang-ko][lang-en]Lagrange mechanics and quantum mechanics[/lang-en]
[lang-en]If you studied undergraduate-level quantum mechanics, you would probably know that Hamiltonians appear in quantum mechanics. However, you probably would not have seen Lagrangians. This article introduces the connection between Lagrangians and quantum mechanics. For this part, knowledge of quantum mechanics is required.[/lang-en]
[lang-en]In quantum mechanics, one of the important quantities is the transition probability from one point to another point. In classical mechanics, one can exactly compute the trajectory, but in quantum mechanics, it is fundamentally impossible, and thus, we can only know the transition probability.[/lang-en]
[lang-en]The transition probability from one point $\mathbf{x}_1$ at time $t_1$ to $\mathbf{x}_2$ at time $t_2$is quantum mechanically given as below. I will skip the derivation since it is beyond the scope of this article.[/lang-en]
$$P(\mathbf{x}_1,t_1\rightarrow\mathbf{x}_2,t_2)\propto\left \lvert \sum_\text{all possible paths} e^{\frac{i}{\hbar} \int_{t_1}^{t_2} dt \, L(\mathbf{x},\dot{\mathbf{x}};t)} \right \rvert^2$$
[lang-en]How do we interpret this result? Quantum mechanically, due to the uncertainty principle, particles can go through any path from $\mathbf{x}_1$ to $\mathbf{x}_2$. Only the probability amplitudes are different. This probability amplitude is given by the exponential with the phase factor the same as the action. Also, since particles have wave-like properties, these amplitudes are linearly added, just like the superposition of waves. Finally, the resultant probability is the absolute square of the summed amplitudes.[/lang-en]
[lang-en]Now, take the classical approximation, that is, $\hbar \rightarrow 0$. Then, when the path is changed slightly, the action changes are small, but since $\hbar$ is very small, the phase oscillates extremely quickly. Thus, the sum of probability amplitudes becomes zero for most paths due to the rapidly oscillating phases. However, for paths with stationary actions, in which the derivative is zero, a kind of constructive interference occurs. Therefore, the stationary path gives the dominant contribution to the probability. This is the famous stationary phase approximation and the result is the principle of least action.[/lang-en]
[lang-en]Wait! Then, why stationary becomes minimum? Actually, only the stationary condition is needed for general. The classical path is often a saddle point in terms of action.[/lang-en]
[/lang-ko]
[lang-en]With this, we derived classical mechanics from quantum mechanics. [/lang-en]
[lang-ko]푸아송 괄호와 양자역학[/lang-ko][lang-en]Poisson brackets and quantum mechanics[/lang-en]
[lang-en]While introducing the Poisson brackets, I left a hidden story about it: the Poisson brackets between coordinate and momentum looks familiar.[/lang-en]
$$ \{q_i, p_j\} = \delta_{ij}$$
[lang-en]If you learned quantum mechanics, you can find out that it looks like a commutation relation between position and momentum.[/lang-en]
$$ [x,p] = i\hbar$$
[lang-en]Apart from these similarities in the formulas, there is a deeper relationship between them. To explain this, we need to know Heisenberg picture. However, for this moment, I will explain it with the more familiar Schrodinger equation-based quantum mechanics.[/lang-en]
[lang-en]In Griffith's quantum mechanics book, there is an often neglected formula which is shown below.[/lang-en]
$$\frac{d\langle A \rangle }{dt} = \frac{i}{\hbar}\langle [H,A]\rangle+ \left \langle \frac{\partial A}{\partial t}\right \rangle$$
[lang-en]This formula is similar to the one shown below.[/lang-en]
$$\frac{dA}{dt} = \{A,H\} + \frac{\partial A}{\partial t}$$
[lang-en]Changing the Poisson bracket to commutator, dividing by $i\hbar$, and taking the expectation values gives the same equation. This correspondence is the reason for the classical mechanics being the approximate theory for quantum mechanics.[/lang-en]
[lang-en]Actually, there are more stories: conservation, symmetries, etc. These are beyond the scope: of graduate quantum mechanics. So I will stop here. Thank you for enjoying the classical mechanics series![/lang-en]
